What is the difference between mental magic & mentalism
Mentalism can be considered to have two borders. On the one side lies magic and on the other we find the supernatural. Whatever magic may have been in the past, today it is considered by most to be a form of entertainment. The magician performs his effects with irony. This does not mean that he or she is joking or doesn't intend the act to be taken seriously, rather that the audience is left to decide whether what they have seen is 'real'.
Consider the following line found in an employer's reference, You'll be lucky to get Scott working for you. Does the referee mean that the new employers will be lucky if they end up with Scott working for them because Scott is a very good worker? Or does it mean that if they employ Scott they'll be lucky to get any work out of him because he is a very lazy worker? Whoever wrote the reference isn't letting us know either way, we are left alone to interpret the reference.
In a similar way, many magicians leave whether or not they intend the audience to believe that they have some kind of supernatural powers up to the audience. While they do not say what they are performing employs sleight of hand and trickery, they do not claim to have supernatural abilities either.
